22 Jan Stars in Their Eyes
I went on Radio Merseyside to discuss the new series of Stars in Their Eyes. I have to say that you cannot compare this new series to the old one in any way, shape or form. To me, it’s more like a Harry Hill sketch show, and in reality that’s what the producers are after, a send up with the contestants acting more like stooges than tribute artistes. When the first series came out in the early eighties, there was no yard stick for how good the acts were and they all blew us away, yet now, being one myself, and having worked with some of the best in the world, I do criticise and look at any trib with curiosity to see if they have worked hard on their character, incorporating, mannerisms, involuntary movement of that character, voice etc, and I have to be honest and say that all of the contestants on the first episode came way short of the standard that I work with.
I applied for this series along with lots of other pro tribs, non of us were selected, that tells you something, that they never intended the series to be top quality and they were always going to use Karaoke tribs instead. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that but what it does do is tell every wanna be singer that anyone can be a tribute, and that’s not good for the industry as there’s enough so called tribs out there who just throw on a wig and learn the words to songs and that entitles them to say they are a tribute to whoever! What I will also say is that, I’m so glad I never got on the show because that would tell me that I’m not very good at who I do! Be careful what you wish for eh!
